Blown insulation (fiberglass)

Advantages: inert and stable material, mould-resistant, naturally fire-resistant, unattractive to rodents, very consistent over decades, allows stronger guarantees. Disadvantages: lower air sealing if installed without preparation. Pair it with good sealing.

Cellulose

2026 average price: $1.45 to $3.00/sq.ft. Good performance/price ratio, grant-eligible, quick installation. More sensitive to moisture if ventilation is imperfect, can settle over time. Best for soundproofing walls and ceilings.

Spray foam (special cases)

2026 average price: $1.40 to $1.80/sq.ft./inch. Excellent air sealing, vapour barrier, very high insulating value (R-6/inch). But very high cost and often not grant-eligible for a full attic. For most attics, spray foam is excessive and needlessly expensive.

Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program

The simplest and most direct. In 2026, LogisVert offers up to $1,500 when the work combines insulation (e.g. attic) and caulking (air sealing). No pre-work energy evaluation is required, which makes it especially accessible. Rénoclimat program (Government of Quebec)

This isn't a fixed amount, but help calculated based on the real improvement in energy efficiency. For roof or attic insulation, the grant goes up to $1,500, and that maximum requires an attic at R-12 or less before the work. Rénoclimat requires an energy evaluation before and after the work, without the pre-work evaluation, no grant is possible.

LogisVert or Rénoclimat?

LogisVert is often preferred for its simplicity and clear amount (up to $1,500) with no prior evaluation. Rénoclimat is mainly advantageous when the existing insulation is very low. Note: combining the two programs for the same work is not allowed. Well-designed insulation remains worthwhile with or without a grant.
