Vermiculite: an asbestos risk you shouldn't ignore

Vermiculite is a beige-gold granular insulation (often sold under the name Zonolite) used in thousands of Quebec attics before the 1990s. The problem: much of that vermiculite is contaminated with asbestos. As long as it's left alone, the risk is low — but the moment it's disturbed (renovation, adding insulation, running wiring), asbestos fibres can be released into the air.

Why you should never do it yourself

Handling vermiculite or asbestos without protection or containment exposes the entire home to invisible fibres that are dangerous to the lungs. In Quebec, this work is regulated by the CNESST and requires strict safety, containment and disposal procedures.
